Mobile gantry crane are basically composed of the two girders, travel mechanisms, lift mechanisms, and electrical parts. The lift capacity of the mobile gantry crane may be hundreds of tons, so this is also a type of heavy-duty gantry crane. There is another type of mobile gantry crane, European-type double-girder gantry cranes. It have adopted the concept of light weight, low pressure on wheels, a smaller enclosing area, dependable operation, and a compact structure.

Mobile gantry crane is also often used at mines, iron and steel mills, railroad yards, and marine ports. It benefit from the double-girder design with higher capacities, larger spans, or higher lift heights. Double-girder cranes typically require a greater clearance above the cranes beam-level elevation, as the lift trucks traverse above the girders on the cranes bridge. Since single-girder cranes require only one runway beam, these systems generally have lower dead weight, meaning that they can use lighter-weight runway systems and attach to existing buildings supporting structures, which cannot do heavy duty work like double girder mobile gantry crane.
The types of mobile gantry crane is also suitable for construct concrete blocks, extremely heavy steel bracing girders, and loading of timber. Double girder gantry crane are available in two styles,A type and U type, and are equipped with a built-in lift mechanism, usually either an open-ended hoist or winch.
