The type of hoist used on an overhead crane depends on its intended application and the types of loads it will be required to lift. Generally, there are two main types of hoists that can be used with overhead cranes – chain hoists and wire rope hoists.
Chain Hoists:
Chain hoists are commonly used for smaller, lighter-weight loads, such as those found in industrial and agricultural settings. The construction of a chain hoist is relatively simple as it consists of only a few components, such as a chain, a set of hooks and a lifting mechanism. The components work together to raise, lower, move and pivot the load. Chain hoists are easy to install and cost-effective, and require minimal maintenance.
Wire Rope Hoists:
Wire rope hoists are used for medium to heavy-duty overhead lifting applications. This type of hoist consists of two parts – the lifting mechanism and the wire rope. The lifting mechanism consists of a motor, transmission, drum, shaft and brake, while the wire rope has a series of interlocking strands that provide strength and flexibility. Wire rope hoists are more complex and require more maintenance than chain hoists, but they can handle greater loads, higher speeds and longer lifts.
No matter what type of hoist is used, it is important to select the right type and size for the application, taking into account the weight, size and type of load that will be handled, as well as the environment in which it will operate. All hoists are subject to inspections, maintenance and repairs to ensure the safety and longevity of the system.
